Sutter Home’s “Breast Cancer
Awareness” Sells Wine, Ignores Risks
What they say:
”The universal symbol of breast cancer awareness, the
pink ribbon, will appear prominently on our Sutter Home White
Zinfandel bottles. We believe this will communicate a message
of hope and remind women to take a moment for themselves and
schedule a mammogram or exam.”
What they don’t tell you:
Alcohol is a known human carcinogen, and drinking it is a
risk factor for developing breast
cancer. Women who have two to five drinks a day have about
1.5 times the risk of women who drink no alcohol.
Sutter Home Fantasy vs. Our
Reality:
A study of women in Marin County,
California revealed that those who consumed three drinks
a day were nearly four times more likely to be diagnosed with
breast cancer than those who drank less.
