Jeff Black's story about the attacks at Coors Field

On April, 14, 2004 two drunken fans assaulted me and my 9-year-old son during a Colorado Rockies game at Coors field. These fans have since been criminally convicted, but the Rockies and beer vendor Aramark have not been held accountable for their part in th ese a ttacks . The assaults occurred well after Rockies staff were notified that intoxicated individuals were harassing us. Further, the intoxicated individuals were allowed to consume and purchase more alcohol and to return and remain in the presence of those that had already complained of their behavior. The subsequent events included two separate assaults on my son and me  over a 15 -to-20  minute period, and a dangerous melee as fans surrounding us came to our rescue.

The Rockies and Aramark have refused to talk to us about our concerns. Aramark has responded that "it is not in charge of security at Coors Field." The Rockies  have denied any wrongdoing or responsibility and have minimized and trivialized the assaults by referring to them as  " beer-spilling " and as inherent risks of attending a Major League Baseball game. The Rockies  wrote in a legal filing that "The possibility that beer might be spilled by spectators in large sporting events is another inherent risk. Anyone attending a baseball game - including the Blacks - is or should be well aware of these inherent risks posed by fellow spectators." The Rockies even went so far as to claim immunity from liability due to the baseball act that was written to preclude suits from "risk and danger incidental to the game of baseball whether occurring prior to, during or subsequent to the actual playing of the game, including specifically, but not exclusively, the danger of being injured by thrown bats, fragments thereof, and thrown or batted balls..." Any citizen or baseball fan should be outraged at the callous and deceitful manner in which the Rockies  are attempting to escape accountability and liability for their poor management of the sale of alcohol and security at Coors Field.
