Youth Coalition Spurs Action on Alcopops Tax

The California State Board of Equalization will hold its first public meeting February 22, 2007, as part of a rule-making process prompted by a youth petition asking the BOE to reclassify alcopops as distilled spirits.

In addition to increasing State tax revenue by approximately $40 million, the reclassification of alcopops as distilled spirits “would raise the price, and reduce appeal to young people.”

SUPPORT THE YOUTH PETITITON
TO RE-CLASSIFY ALCOPOPS AS DISTILLED SPIRITS

Statement of Support

I/We, the undersigned, support this youth-led effort to reduce underage drinking by decreasing access to the sweet, bubbly, alcoholic beverages known as “alcopops.”

We support the following:

  • appropriate classification of beverages that contain distilled spirits as distilled spirits.
  • taxation of these beverages as distilled spirits, consistent with California law.
  • placing the burden of proof on the manufacturers, where the source of the alcohol is in dispute

We acknowledge and applaud the initiative taken by these youth to protect their peers from products formulated and marketed to promote underage drinking.
