Nonprofit and Academic Organizations
Alcohol Advertising Reform Initiative
This grassroots organization in Syracuse, New York, mobilizes community members to combat irresponsible advertising practices by the alcohol industry. Available at aari@aari-net.org
Alcohol Epidemiology Program (AEP), School of Public Health, University of Minnesota
AEP conducts and disseminates research on effective community and policy-level strategies for reducing alcohol problems. The program’s Web site includes information on the Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) model program, highlights of alcohol policies nationwide and other research and resources.
American Medical Association, Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse
The Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse focuses on reducing underage alcohol abuse. This office administers initiatives to support community coalitions, reduce high-risk drinking on college campuses and engage health professionals in reducing and preventing alcohol problems.
Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG)
The Berkeley Media Studies Group works with community groups, journalists and public health professionals to use the power of the media to advance healthy public policy. The BMSG Web site features case studies, newsletters and other publications on media advocacy and public health.
Center for Science in the Public Interest, Alcohol Policies Project
The Alcohol Policies Project helps to focus public and policy-maker attention on policy reforms to reduce the health and social consequences of drinking. The project has worked with thousands of organizations and individuals to promote a comprehensive, prevention-oriented policy strategy to change the role of alcohol in society.
Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY)
Based at Georgetown University, CAMY monitors alcohol industry marketing to focus attention and mobilize action on practices that jeopardize the health and safety of American youth.
Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA)
CADCA provides new and existing coalitions with training, technical assistance, and guidance on public-policy and media strategies, and other types of support.
FACE: Resources, Training and Action on Alcohol Issues
FACE is a national nonprofit organization that supports sensible alcohol practices through the development of messages, strategies and training designed to create public awareness and action on alcohol issues.
Join Together
A project of the Boston University School of Public Health, Join Together provides news, action alerts and other information that supports community-based efforts to reduce, prevent and treat substance abuse.
New Futures
New Futures is an independent nonprofit organization working to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug problems in New Hampshire. In addition to resources specific to prevention and treatment in that state, the organization’s Web site features information on funding opportunities and a variety of prevention-related links.
Oregon Partnership
The Oregon Partnership supports communities throughout the state in preventing and treating drug and alcohol problems. The Partnership’s Web site includes a variety of links, publications and tools related to community-based prevention.
Prevention by Design
A project of the Institute for the Study of Social Change at the University of California, Berkeley, Prevention by Design provides California counties, as well as local communities and community organizations, with training, technical assistance and ongoing support on research-based prevention. Prevention by Design’s Web site includes information on its training and other services, plus a series of articles on prevention and many relevant links.
Prevention Research Center (of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation)
Prevention Research Center (PRC) focuses on conducting research to better understand the social and physical environments that influence individual behavior leading to alcohol and drug misuse. PRC operates Resource Link: Research in Action (resources.prev.org), a Web site providing information and practical guidance for state and local organizations, policy-makers and members of the general public.
Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center
(of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation)
Established by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, this Center provides training and technical assistance to states and communities working to combat underage drinking through law enforcement and environmental policy change.
Youth Leadership Institute (YLI)
This national nonprofit provides programs, training and consultation that help communities engage young people as leaders and advocates. YLI’s Web site includes information on the organization’s training and consultation services and features downloadable tools and resources on youth-led environmental prevention.
Government Agencies
Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP)
CSAP is a program of the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, providing national leadership in the prevention of illegal substance use and underage alcohol and tobacco use. CSAP promotes prevention approaches based on community involvement and broad partnerships.
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
Part of the National Institutes of Health, NIAAA conducts, supports and disseminates scientific research on the health effects of alcohol consumption as well as on alcohol prevention and treatment. Among NIAAA’s resources is the Alcohol Policy Information System (alcoholpolicy.niaaa.nih.gov), a comprehensive database of state and federal alcohol policies.
U.S. Department of Education’s Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention
With a focus on environmental strategies, the Center helps college and community leaders take steps to reduce student problems related to alcohol and other drug use and interpersonal violence. Services include technical assistance, training, publications and evaluation.
