Campus & Community Action Pack

If you want to address alcohol-related problems on a college or university campus and in the surrounding community, this action pack is for you.

Background

You probably know that underage and excessive drinking on college campuses is a major public health and safety issue, both for students and for residents of the surrounding communities. But drinking by college students has a far more serious impact on communities and campuses than many people realize. Approximately 1,400 student deaths, 500,000 injuries, and 70,000 cases of sexual assault or date rape each year are related to alcohol use. Alcohol is also implicated in suicide, vandalism, property damage, and poor academic performance among college students.

  Boy Drinking

Addressing alcohol problems on campus can be a difficult process. Students, administrators, community members, and parents often share the notion that alcohol use in college is a normal way of life. Prospective college students may even pick schools because of their noted party status and adults may feel that college drinking is a normal "rite of passage."

The good news is that alcohol-related problems in campus communities can be effectively addressed. A first step is to recognize that alcohol use by students is not an inevitable part of college, but is a consequence of the social, cultural, and physical environment in campus settings. University decision makers, students, parents, community members, and local businesses all have a role to play in reducing alcohol problems.

Next Step: Getting Started

On one out of every three American college campuses, more than half of all students engage in high-risk drinking, consuming four to five or more drinks in a row.
