History

In 1987, The Marin Institute (TMI) began its work as one of three special projects supported by the Leonard and Beryl Buck Foundation (The Buck Trust).  TMI works to reduce alcohol problems through environmental prevention -- improving our physical and social environment to promote health and safety. TMI supports effective alcohol policy, conducts media advocacy, and provides technical assistance to grassroots campaigns and community education programs in Marin County and nationwide.  The Institute provides concerned individuals, public health organizations and the media with accurate information on alcohol problems, alcohol industry practices, and successful prevention strategies.

The Buck Trust

The Leonard and Beryl Buck Foundation (Buck Trust) was created in 1975 after Beryl Buck left $9.1 million to Marin County, California with the provision that it be used to serve the needs of the County residents.  The Buck Trust supports The Marin Institute, The Buck Institute for Age Research, the Buck Institute on Education, and the Marin Community Foundation.

The Marin Institute is funded by the Buck Trust, which also funds the The Buck Institute for Age Research, the Buck Institute for Education, and the Marin Community Foundation.
